This blog is a clearing house for writing, research, and projects. This page is a clearing house for other contributions to conferences, print media, radio, etc. See below a bibliography of publications and interviews hosted elsewhere, and some detail about projects I’m involved with.
Projects
NZs Road to Socialism – Oral History Project
A project with origins going back to the early 2010s, I’ve been involved as a committee member and Dunedin contact since 2022. NZ’s Road to Socialism is a project to record oral histories with veteran activists who contributed to the broader socialist and social movements of the 20th into the first few years of the 21st centuries. While progress has been slow going, interviews are now underway and there are regular committee meetings.
Otago Socialist Society
I have been a member of the Otago Socialist Society for a number of years, and currently sit on its committee as well as host its local show on Otago Access Radio. It is an educational and social organisation which hosts events and contributes to the life of the local socialist left to that end. It is furthermore a constituent society within the Federation of Socialist Societies, with sibling societies in Canterbury and Wellington as well as at-large members across the country.
Left from Nowhere
Speaking of the radio, I’ve hosted Left from Nowhere on Otago Access Radio 105.4fm/1575am on behalf of the Otago Socialist Society since 2024. The show is long-form interview focused with primarily local guests discussing politics, social issues, world affairs, and working life. As with the above projects, interest in the show can be directed to the email or contact form on the contact page.
The Alliance
As some may have heard, the Alliance Party was revived for the campaign of Tom Roud in this year’s local body elections for the Christchurch Central Ward (both council and community board). While this did not pan out with a victory, there was a surprising amount of interest around the country which has translated into a significant jump in membership keen to take things further. I’ve signed up (or, perhaps, been drafted), and will be assisting in the establishment of formal party structures (particularly a branch in Ōtepoti) with the aim to hosting a party conference by mid-2026. Personally, I see this as a chance to establish a durable electoral vehicle for socialists in Aotearoa, and encourage socialists to join and at least see it through to the conference next year to determine if this thing has legs or not.
Spectre of History Collective
A reading & discussion group that I and a couple friends have put together focused on revolutionary history from the 14th – 20th centuries. The general gist is that the group will read and discuss texts on the topic of revolutionary history over a 600 year period running from the immense social fallout of the Black Death to the onset of the Cold War, essentially covering the period in which modern revolutionary politics emerged from the peasant and labour revolts of the 1370s-1380s all the way to the final climactic chapter of the Chinese Civil War and the establishment of a second major communist power on the world stage. Participating in the collective does not entail joining with the intent to attend every or most session(s). Participants are welcome to dip in and out as time dictates, with the only expectation being that if a topic spans multiple sessions (say, a full book rather than one or a handful of shorter texts) than they should make reasonable efforts to attend all of those sessions. We are physically based in Ōtepoti, however we accept read-alongs from outside the city (or the country!) who are welcome to track the texts we are reading. Any interest should be directed to the contact form or email for this blog.
Publications
The Book – Histories of Hate: The Radical Right in New Zealand
After a great deal of work, the edited collection Histories of Hate: The Radical Right in New Zealand was published in 2022. Originally emerging nearly 4 years earlier at a conference on fascism & anti-fascism held in the aftermath of the Christchurch terror attack on 15th March 2019, Histories of Hate was the culmination of years of research on a once deeply obscure topic. I and my coauthor Dr Sebastian Potgieter contributed the chapter “‘A bastion of white supremacy’ – Southern Africa in the political imagination of New Zealand’s radical right”, unearthing a long history of rightist solidarity in New Zealand with the cause of white rule in Southern Africa.
Available for purchase in multiple places, Histories of Hate was published by and continues to be available through Otago University Press where it can be purchased for $50. It is also available at various libraries and collections around the country.
